Corrosion

Corrosion in general is the reaction of a material with its environment, which causes a measurable change in the material and can result in negative effects on the function of a component or system, i.e. a change in the chemical or physical structure of a material due to heat or light.

This process can result in a worsening of the properties. Also called degradation.
